ESE-OUL concept bicycle in full profile showcasing solid ash frame tubes, wooden rims, and bead-blasted metal lugs

ESE-OUL

Seoul, KOR · Product Design · Institution / Design Competition · 2010
Shortlisted at the Seoul Cycle Design Competition organized by the Seoul Design Foundation and Designboom, ESE-OUL — a play on easy, no oil — looks toward a post-fossil city by reclaiming cycling's most tactile heritage. Before carbon and extruded alloys, the finest racing rims were bent from hickory and ash, chosen because living wood breathes with the road and absorbs vibration with a quiet elasticity no metal can match.

Here, that memory becomes the soul of a contemporary urban machine. Solid ash and hickory move from the deep-section rims into the frame tubes and handlebar, joined to bead-blasted alloy lugs where mechanical stress is highest. Brushed stainless steel houses front and rear LED lighting directly within the stem and seatpost, erasing every wire and bracket until only the essential dialogue remains: warm timber under the hands, honest welds, and a city bicycle with a soul.
